Turnbull rejects Abbott credit claim

PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull has rejected Tony Abbott's claim the Coalition will fight the election campaign on the Abbott government's record.

The former prime minister told Sky News there had been only minor policy changes since Mr Turnbull took office and it would be "very easy" to campaign for the Turnbull government as it was "running on the record of the Abbott government".

Mr Turnbull told the ABC that although there was some continuity between his government and Mr Abbott's, there were also big differences.

"There are many policies that have been announced and many initiatives that have been undertaken that were either not policies or not being pursued by Mr Abbott," he said.

Asked on Macquarie Radio if Mr Abbott had the potential to disrupt the Coalition's campaign, Mr Turnbull said: "It depends what he says, frankly, whether it's a plus or a minus depends entirely on the nature of his contribution."

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said Mr Abbott's comments highlighted the divisions in the government.
