Turnbull urges Russia and Turkey to cool it

PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull has urged restraint from both Turkey and Russia in the wake of the downing of a Russian fighter jet on the border of Syria and Turkey.

Russian president Vladimir Putin denied on Wednesday that the aircraft had entered Turkish airspace and warned of "serious consequences" for the "stab in the back".

Turkey insisted it warned the aircraft 10 times in five minutes it was in Turkish territory - a claim backed by the US military.

However, a US military official told Reuters the Russian jet was hit inside Syrian airspace.

Mr Turnbull said the issue was a "matter of significance" and all parties should exercise restraint as "not all the facts and circumstances" were known.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for a "credible and thorough review" of the incident to clarify what happened and prevent a repeat.

The fate of the Russian pilots, who both ejected from the plane, remained unclear.

A Turkish official said one of the pilots might still be alive.
