Two fathers die while trying to rescue their sons

THREE men have drowned on unpatrolled Victorian beaches in separate incidents over the weekend, including two fathers who died trying to rescue their sons.

The tragic day on Victorian beaches began after lunch on Saturday when a 62-year-old man drowned while trying to save his son, 12.

The young boy had been swept out to sea at St George River, west of Lorne.

In a similar incident more than 350km away at Golden Beach, another man died after trying to save his child.

Both children are recovering in hospital.

In the third incident, a young man died at Rye Back beach while snorkelling with friends.

The three tragedies have prompted authorities to urge Victorians to swim only between the flags.
