Hervey Bay may get artificial reefs worth $1.5 million

TWO planned artificial reefs worth $1.5 million could be welcomed by Fraser Coast fishers by 2016.

State Government officials spoke with stakeholders about possible locations before Christmas.

"It was about $1.5m for Hervey Bay, so that's pretty good money to have around, but it's pretty important to make sure we have good fishing in this area," Member for Hervey Bay Ted Sorensen said.

"Those artificial reefs are more for the recreational fisherman."

Options include areas north-east of Little Woody Island and the outer bank near Moon Point, with Mr Sorensen suggesting divers would be considered.

Fraser Coast Fishing Alliance president Scott Mitchell said both of the reefs would do wonders for angling region-wide.

"It'd be awesome. We definitely want reefs away from where the current ones are and these would be in open water," Mr Mitchell said.

"The consensus is that they're just outside of the main current flows on the outer banks area.

"So they would be like a pimple on a haystack because it's just a big paddock out there, so if you went and created a couple of reefs in that area it'd be terrific."

Hervey Bay Downunder's Syd Tanner - who promoted the region's current natural and artificial reefs in a DVD he released - said both additions would prove an attraction.

"Regular divers would certainly testify to the fact that there's more fish on the artificial reef than anywhere else in the Bay," he said.

Five possible locations

  • Rooney Point
  • Moon Point and Outer Bank Moon Point
  • Outer Bank
  • North-east of Little Woody Island
  • Tinnanbar
