Tyndale crash victim’s tragic past

THE Fernvale teenager killed in a horrific crash at Tyndale this week was just months ago mysteriously doused in petrol and set alight while sitting in his vehicle at a Southport road.

In November, Tweed Daily News reported 19-year-old Samuel Reeve was placed in an induced coma at a Brisbane hospital after the incident on the morning of November 22, 2015, which left him with burns to the right side of his body, including around his neck and mouth.

Police ruled out a random attack at the time, saying a can of petrol was found in the back seat of his vehicle and that whatever happened had originated from inside the Toyota Camry.

It was the same type of vehicle he was driving when his car collided with another vehicle and spun into the path of a B-double truck on the Pacific Highway at Tyndale on Tuesday night.

Since the former Murwillumbah High School student's death, the Murwillumbah High School P&C Association and the Tweed Border Hockey Association have taken to Facebook in recent days to offer their condolences to his family.

"Sam was well known to and well liked by many hockey members," the association wrote.

Waratah Hockey Club secretary Annette O'Connor said Sam played with the club from the age of 7 or 8 until about two years ago.

She said the Waratah's A-grade men and women would wear black armbands during games tonight and tomorrow to pay respects to Sam and his family.

No details have been released in regards to a funeral.
