A 15-YEAR-OLD boy sustained fractures and internal injuries after he was thrown on to a windscreen when he stepped out in front of a car in North Bundaberg.

Bundaberg police Sergeant Mick Ward said the crash happened at Fairymead Rd, near the intersection of Thygesen St, at 3.30pm on Friday.

"It appears the pedestrian has entered the roadway in front of the driver of the vehicle," he said.

"He was then struck by the vehicle."

The boy was rushed to Bundaberg Hospital suffering "fairly significant injuries" including cuts, fractures and suspected internal injuries.

He underwent emergency surgery at the weekend and remains in a stable condition.

Sgt Ward said early investigations suggested the driver, an 18-year-old P-plater, was not at fault.

"The driver received some minor injuries," he said.

Sgt Ward said the seriousness of the crash highlighted a number of safety measures for pedestrians and drivers.

"If you are a pedestrian, take all necessary safety steps you can when crossing the road, particularly as you're entering the roadway," he said.

"If you are a driver, exercise caution when pedestrians are on the road.

"Pedestrians can be unpredictable, especially children."

Be very cautious of traffic near crests of hills and curves, if a vehicle is approaching make sure you have a safe escape available and be prepared to use it
