US government shutdown almost certain

UNITED States government departments will almost certainly shut down on Tuesday, with Republicans in Congress sticking to their tactic of using a budget bill to overturn changes to a healthcare law.

The two houses of the US Congress must reach agreement by midnight Monday (local time) on the budget bill in order for government departments to keep operating.

However, Republicans have attached a clause to the budget that would strip money from the health care law known as Obamacare, effectively killing it.

President Barack Obama has refused to negotiate over his health care reforms and says he will veto any amended bill with the backing of the Democrats, who control the Senate.

With no backdown in sight and the Monday deadline looming, hundreds of thousands of government workers look set to be laid off until the crisis is resolved.
