Van Gisbergen cashes in on McLaughlin's mistake

MOTORSPORT: A late mistake from Scott McLaughlin has allowed reigning champion Shane van Gisbergen to win for the second day running at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.

McLaughlin was on course for victory before lokcing up his brakes with handful of laps remaining to allow the New Zealander in his Red Bull Holden to slip through.

Van Gisbergen had taken pole but surrendered the early lead to both Shell Fords with Fabian Coulthard out in front in the early stages.

Afetr an early pit stop from McLaughlin, Van Gisbergen picked up his speed and eventually took the lead from Coulthard on lap 14.

McLaughlin regained the lead on lap 17 and pulled clear to take a 10-second advantage ahead of the final stops.

He was handed a bad sportsmanship flag on lap 62 for an overuse of the turn two kerbs as van Gisbergen turned up the pressure, cutting the gap to a second with five laps remaining.

The champion got even closer on lap 75 and that's when McLaughlin faltered, allowing can Gisbergen through to score the 100th Supercars win for the VF Commodore.

McLaughlin held on for second with Chaz Mostert in third after clever strategy from his Prodrive team moved him through the field through pitstops.

The 2014 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 winner had only narrowly missed out on staying ahead of van Gisbergen during the second stops in a crucial moment for the race.

James Courtney held on for fourth place despite mid-race contact with Simona De Silvestro that turned her Altima around in a move to be investigated after the race.

Rookie drivers De Silvestro and Alex Rullo both finished the race, with De Silvestro coming home 23rd and Rullo 25th.
