EMERGENCY services are responding to reports of a car fire on the up-section of the Toowoomba Range.

Photos have emerged on social media of a vehicle engulfed in flames on the Warrego Hwy, and traffic cameras show congestion is building on the westbound lanes.

A thick plume of black smoke was visible about 1km from the scene of the incident west of the saddle.

The fire was reported to authorities about 6.10pm.

Both lanes of the highway are blocked as Queensland Fire and Emergency Services extinguish the fire.

Injuries are unknown at this stage.
