A MAN accused of making racial slurs before smashing the windscreen of a bus is now facing charges of common assault and malicious damage.

The charges follow bizarre footage appeared online which showed a man in a red singlet striking the windscreen of a public bus with a large branch, before continuing his assault with his bloody hands.

The video was posted with a retelling of the alleged incident at Sydney's Lane Cove, with a Reddit user saying:

"...The guy in the video was in the back of the bus and got up with his fist clenched walking towards the front of the bus.

"An old lady grabbed him and told him "Stop, you've harassed them enough!" referring to a young Asian couple at the front of the bus.

"He then said 'I was just returning him his chopsticks.' The Asian guy said 'What are you going on about I wasn't eating anything, what are you trying to say?'"

"The bus driver told him he's kicking him off or taking him to the police station. He hopped off and everyone started heckling him and that's when he went.

The man in the video fled the scene, but police made an arrest soon after.

The man was taken to hospital by ambulance after suffering injuries from allegedly smashing his body against the glass.
