YouTube star takes up new music gig

HE'S already amassed more than 11 million views on YouTube.

Now Kingaroy-born musician, Russell Bauer, is about the take the next step in his music teaching and performance career.

In two weeks time Mr Bauer is starting work as the director of the New England Conservatory in Armidale.

It's a different direction to the videos that gave him a taste of fame a couple of years ago.

Mr Bauer's video, "When Mama Isn't Home", which he made with his son, gathered millions of views on YouTube and saw him appear on breakfast television.

The video featured Mr Bauer on trombone and his son keeping the beat on an oven door.

His new job will allow him to nurture a love of music in his students, as he will be responsible for music programs at 12 schools across the New England region.

"The really wonderful thing is students from those schools get to come to the conservatory to perform concerts and participate in weekly rehearsals and workshops," Mr Bauer said.

He is currently the Head of Performance - Music at Sheldon College in Brisbane.

While at Sheldon, Mr Bauer has worked with Suncorp Stadium and The Gabba to secure regular performance spots for the jazz and orchestra bands during cricket test matches and rugby union games.

Closer to home Mr Bauer not only attended Kingaroy State High School as a student but also taught there from 1999-2004.

"I was one of the instrumental music teachers based at the high school," he said.

Mr Bauer thinks every student should learn an instrument.

"We've know for decades that music helps create a well-rounded individual," he said.

"In this age of instant gratification, music as an art form takes years to master.

"It teaches you patience and perseverance."
