Volunteering couple's special games

HUSBAND and wife volunteers, Tim and Kahila Huddleston have shared a special experience at the Commonwealth Games.

Games volunteer Mr Huddleston said he was proud they had the chance to be in the high privilege roles.

"We haven't met any other couple that has been able to do this together, we got a pretty unique opportunity,” he said.

The South Burnett couple have been both volunteering at the table tennis competition on the Gold Coast, as team members assisting the athletes at matches and ceremonies.

"We're all working together really well, the managers are trusting us to organise ourselves now,” he said.

Mr Huddleston was honoured to be chosen to lead the athletes out to the first table tennis gold medal match, and later see the competition's first medal ceremony.

"You could see the emotion on the athletes' faces, some of them were trying so hard not to cry, and some of them were laughing,” he said.

Through volunteering, they have had the best seats in the house at the table tennis competitions, Mr Huddleston said.

"It doesn't matter if you are guarding the athletes' toilets or a ball boy right on the courts, you definitely have an amazing view,” he said.

The close interaction with the top of the world athletes has been a highlight for the volunteering couple.

"You get to a first name basis with some of them, if they're friendly enough, and that's really special,” Mr Huddleston said.

In their volunteer roles, the Huddlestons have followed the athletes' journeys through watching the players during warm up games, heats and then to the finals.

Mr Huddleston will be volunteering at the men's singles grand final and hopes to glimpse the royals, Prince Charles and Camilla, who may visit if England plays in a final.
