WATCH: Dramatic arrest of axe-wielding man caught on camera

A 24-YEAR-OLD South Mackay man wielding an axe had 10 police officers and nearby residents fearing for their safety on Saturday.

About 10.30am police received a number of calls from members of the public in relation to an armed man on Margaret Street.

The man had an axe and had allegedly got involved in an altercation with other people on the street and as a result a vehicle was damaged.

As police arrived on scene they were confronted with the man who was allegedly highly agitated, shirtless and then turned to threaten police with the axe.

Mackay CIB officer-in-charge Detective Senior Sergeant David Tucker said the situation was high risk for all involved.

"When police arrived they drew their firearms and called upon the person to drop the axe, the male person refused despite a number of repeated calls from police with their firearms drawn," he said.

"Eventually other police arrived at the scene, about 10 in total ... he eventually dropped the weapon and complied with police instruction.

"I have spoken to police that were on that morning, they certainly were affected by the situation. This person was very aggressive and they feared injury, given it was a full size axe there was a high risk of them being injured.

"There was a lot of yelling and screaming and there were a number of members of the community that were concerned, we don't want that sort of behaviour in our community."

Senior Sergeant Tucker said police could not confirm whether there were drugs or alcohol involved in the incident.

"He was just highly agitated, but we don't know whether that was drug or alcohol related or just a part of the incident," he said.

"This male has since been charged with a number of serious offences on two accounts of serious obstruct of police officers, going armed to cause fear and also wilful damage of a motor vehicle.

"Normally they are held at the watchouse for a period of time then transferred to Capricornia Correction Centre."
