AN ELDERLY woman has been taken to Hervey Bay Hospital after a two-car crash at the intersection of Maryborough Hervey Bay Rd and Urraween Rd.

At about 8.30am on Sunday, a four wheel drive and sedan collided at the notorious intersection, which caused the road to close for about an hour.

The woman was the driver of one of the cars involved, and was assessed by Queensland Ambulance Service officers on site and taken to hospital.

Her injuries are unknown.

A middle-aged man, who was driving the other car, and his teenage son were also assessed by QAS.

It is unknown at this time if they were also transported to hospital.

Police diverted traffic towards Chapel Rd until the scene was cleared.

Acting Hervey Bay fire station officer Mal McKay said absorbent material was poured on Maryborough Hervey Bay Rd to make the road safe to travel again after the crash.

"It was mostly radiator fluid from one of the cars, but it make the road slippery," Officer McKay said.

"On the scene assisted QAS and we all worked together to ensure people were taken to hospital when needed."
