WATCH: Tourist recounts brazen handbag theft at Bargara
A BRAZEN bag snatcher at Bargara has ruined a Gold Coast tourist's holiday after the young victim was left without any funds for the last few days of her holiday.
Visiting her grandparents at Bargara, Ebony Ryan was lying on the grassed area near the Turtle Park when a man swiped her handbag from next to her in broad daylight at about 10.30am Tuesday.
To matters worse, after reporting it to police, Ms Ryan discovered the fast-moving thief had racked up four transactions on her bank card in about 15 minutes.
Ms Ryan said she was lying down when she felt a man run past her but initially didn't think anything of it.
"About 10 minutes later I turned around and my handbag was gone," she said.
"There was families playing in the playground right next to me and no one's seen anything.
"So I reported it to police and he's made four transactions within 15 minutes. So he's taken about $200."
Ms Ryan said she felt anxious and under a huge amount of pressure after realising her bag had been taken.
"My whole life is in there so I was a bit anxious," she said.
"When I called the bank it was quite difficult to actually stop my cards so then I felt even more anxious.
"And I guess it's just ruined my holiday. I've been here for three days and I'm going home on Saturday. I'm going to be without any money or cards."
Ms Ryan said she was able to cancel her bank card but would now face the task of replacing her driver's licence and student ID card.
However Ms Ryan praised the police for their efforts and was hopeful they would find the man responsible by using CCTV footage from the area.
"The police were very helpful at Bargara so they're on to it and hopefully they can find something with the footage," she said.
Ms Ryan's grandfather Greg Kennedy has lived in Bargara for 19 years and said he'd always felt safe but would now have to rethink his security and make sure to lock everything up.
"You don't expect someone to snatch a bag in Bargara, a nice quiet suburban town like this," he said.
