Water Angels’ drought-assistance vision goes viral
A SUNSHINE Coast mum's vision to help her drought-affected home town has gone viral, with people coming from all corners of the state to pitch in with bottled water.
Anna Bradley had heard of the drought crippling residents in Warwick and Stanthorpe but until recently hadn't grasped the severity.
Recently she heard of their plight on the radio - how the towns were battling the worst drought in history - and a little voice urged her to act.
Together with friend and Sunshine Coast school teacher Rachel Wise, the pair formed Sunshine Coast Water Angels to aid the town.
"I grew up in Warwick, and Rachel taught at Stanthorpe… I remember thinking someone needs to do something. Then a little voice popped up and said why not you," Ms Bradley said.
"Some of the residents can't flush their toilets, they can't feed cattle. Something as simple as us washing their hair or turning the tap on, which we take for granted, they can't do.
"They're only four hours from us, but the contrast is incomprehensible. They're going to run out of water by Christmas.
"I can't imagine the emotional drain on the families. It's insurmountable. The damage will be generational."
Word has quickly spread of the pair's cause and Queensland has answered the call.
"The response has been enormous. We've had people from the Gold Coast, as far north as Townsville, Brisbane, Airlie Beach, all want to help," she said.
"We have started this with blind faith. And we're asking for bottled water so they can recycle the bottles, but we'll take any water we can.
"The only thing we need is drop off points so we can collect the water. We have two trucks lined up but more are needed. We want to send as much as possible."
Kleer Ice Supplies have donated two eight-tonne trucks to deliver the water which will be distributed by Granite Belt Drought Assist.
The water will be collected from Chancellor State College on Sippy Downs Drive on Saturday September 7 from 12-5pm.
