‘We are all in this together’: Year 12 students in limbo

AS IF transitioning from OPs to ATAR scores wasn't enough for this year's Queensland Year 12 cohort, they are now facing the challenge of learning from home.

As information regarding the current COVID-19 crisis and restrictions continues to change, senior students are left wondering how long they will be away from their friends and teachers.

Kingaroy State High School vice-captain Toby Schmidt said the situation was disappointing for the whole cohort.

"As a Year 12 student it's really upsetting and sad to not be able to go to school and spend your last year with your friends," Toby said.

"It feels like we are missing out on a lot and the uncertainty surrounding the whole situation at the moment is making it difficult for students.

"All of the students feel the same way, however we are all in this together."

Students will be required to log in to a school portal to access learning, and assessment will be rearranged as much as possible to cater to the online systems.

Toby said focusing on schoolwork was difficult at the moment.

"I think one of the biggest challenges so far has been trying to stay focused on schoolwork when a lot of the things you look forward to in school are cancelled," he said.

"A lot of students look forward to and play sport, both in and out of school, and are really disappointed about it all being cancelled.

"The last few weeks of term one were pretty tough as we were still trying to finish all of our work and prepare to learn from home.

"As the long-term situation is still unknown it's hard to determine what's going to happen with the rest of the year and our ATAR scores."

Toby said although it would be a challenging time for students, it was important they stayed connected and communicated with teachers as much as possible.
