WEATHER WARNING: Potential for capsizing on the water

UPDATE: Water Police are warning about the potential hazard of capsizing on the water during the gale force wind warning BOM has predicted today.

Hervey Bay Water Police Sergeant Paul Bacon said the predicted wind speeds the Bureau of Meteorology has predicted off the coast of Fraser Island and for parts of the South East is potentially hazardous for boaties.

"Smaller vessels could take on water and there is the potential for sinking or capsizing," Sgt Bacon said.

Sgt Bacon said it was a good sign to see very few trailers at the boat ramp.

"People are taking the warnings seriously," he said.

"You're better to be safe than sorry."
