Whistleblower shocked to see top-secret CMC files online

PROTECTED witnesses who gave evidence in the Fitzgerald Inquiry into police corruption are potentially "at risk" after secret files were made available online, Queensland's Attorney General told parliament yesterday.

Expressing his outrage at the "unacceptable oversight" which allowed the files to be viewed by the public, justice minister Jared Bleijie said the Crime and Misconduct Commission was responsible for an "administrative error to the highest grade in Queensland".

His comments came after whistleblower Nigel Powell expressed his shock at thousands of files, the majority of which were suppressed until 2055, being posted on the State Archives website.

He told the Courier Mail the files included details about murder suspects, secret informants, undercover agents, drug operations and police corruption and was concerned there were "still people out there who did put their necks on the line and say stuff on the basis of anonymity".

The Crime and Misconduct Commission has since blocked access to the files.

Mr Bleijie said on Thursday he would instruct the former high court judge heading the current parliamentary inquiry into corruption in the Crime and Misconduct Commission, to review the release of confidential information.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Crime and Misconduct Committee Liz Cunningham said members were "acutely aware" of the sensitivity of the information provided by witnesses to the inquiry.

She said the committee would appoint an independent officer to investigate how the error occurred and report back on a "broad range of emergent issues regarding this matter".
