Why aren't watermelons a good enough treat these days?

IT'S SUMMER time and one of the best parts about summer as a kid was getting a big chunk of watermelon and having to sit in the backyard under the almond tree to eat it.

One colleague recalls putting sugar cubes inside oranges, putting them in the freezer, and later sucking the goodness out of them.

What happened?

Now I see images of kids posted on social media eating pastries (crossiants, etc) every day. Or eating at Maccas or some other fast food brand.

A muffin or packet of chips in the lunch box is not doing your kids waistlines any good either.

Yes, I know there are children that are fussy eaters, but most parents who have fussy eating children still give their kids the healthiest options available of the foods they will eat, not feed them high sugar, high carb options.

And then there are the fast food joints who keep bringing out new or revamped menu items that have more sugars, more carbs, more fats that are no good for the human body.

The most recent culprits are Hungry Jack's and Dominos.

Hungry Jacks has a burger - the Super Stacker Burger Hash Brown(4879 Kj) - which has two beef patties, bacon, barbecue sauce, cheese and a hash brown on it.

Dominos' revamped Chocolate Lava cakes are no better in terms of calories. Now you can now have Starburst lollies, marshmellows, caramel fudge or candy coated chocolates baked inside the cake.

Sugar overdose anyone?

It's time to get back to traditional foods - fresh vegetables, salads and the treats of big chunks of watermelon or the sugar cube in oranges then frozen.
