Wiggins takes first points at Tour
RACE favourite Bradley Wiggins took the points on day one of the Tour de France with a superb second behind Fabian Cancellara in the 6.4km prologue in the Belgian town of Liege.
While Cancellara showed he was back to his best form, the result importantly gave Wiggins a 10-second lead over arch-rival Cadel Evans.
The good news for the Australian was the performance of BMC teammate Tejay van Garderen who finished fourth.
The American said he was confident Evans was coming into his best form at the right time, adding "I think today I proved I can be right there to support him."
The first Australian home in the prologue was Brett Lancaster, riding for the Australian-owned Orica GreenEDGE team, who finished in sixth place.
"This (contesting the Tour for an Australian team) is a dream come true," Lancaster said.
He re-iterated pre-race predictions by team manager Matt White that GreenEDGE was confident of securing at least a stage win to the team's No.1 man, Matt Goss.
