Woman 'forced by boyfriend' to smuggle drugs into jail

A STANTHORPE woman narrowly avoided jail last week for attempting to smuggle drugs into a correctional facility.

The 30-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty in Warwick District Court to supplying a dangerous drug.

Prosecutor Melanie Franklin told the court the woman had been told by her partner to smuggle the substances into the prison.

On July 23, the woman visited her boyfriend in prison with a package hidden in her bra.

Ms Franklin said she was asked by officers whether she had any items to declare.

"She told them she had a package in her bra," Ms Franklin said.

"She had a green balloon with 25 sublingual films of Suboxone (a restricted drug used for opioid addiction).

"People in prison should not be able to have access to dangerous drugs."

Ms Franklin said the interactions between the prisoner and the woman had been monitored by the prison.

Defence barrister Mark Johnson said his client was a victim of an abusive relationship.

"This is a lady who has intellectual difficulties - she cannot read," he said.

"He was in prison for was assault occasioning bodily harm - on her."

Judge Greg Koppenol said he accepted she was under pressure.

"Domestic violence is an incredible scourge on society," he said.

"It puts women under tremendous pressure and into impossible predicaments.

"You felt under pressure of physical harm if you didn't do what your boyfriend told you to do."

The woman was sentenced to two years probation.
