Woman fronts court for punching child in the face

A CHERBOURG woman has faced the Murgon Magistrates Court this week after she punched a child for showing up at her house uninvited.

Kalatena Inez Joan Pegath Priestley faced the magistrate on a charge of common assault for the incident, which took place at 9am on July 26, 2018.

Police prosecutor Marcus Hooper said the victim went to the defendant's address with Priestley's mother.

"The defendant came out of the house yelling at the victim, calling her a 'motherf-----' multiple times.

"The defendant walked over to the vehicle the victim was in, opened the back door, and then with her right hand, clenched her fist and hit the victim in the face," he said.

"The defendant then turned around and walked away."

The victim, who is 17-years-old and considered a child by law, cannot be identified because she is a juvenile.

Defence lawyer Mark Oliver said there had been a long outstanding disagreement between the victim and the defendant.

"She's remorseful for her actions and realises she shouldn't have done that," he said.

Magistrate Louisa Pink told Priestley she needed to learn to control herself.

"I see from your criminal history that you were convicted of common assault in 2009 and then you were convicted in March last year of assault occasioning bodily harm.

"This is your third time in court for an offence of violence, it won't be tolerated," she said.

"It's also not good for your four children to see that all the time, or they'll grow up to think that's the way you settle disagreements, and it isn't."

The magistrate placed the 26-year-old on a six month probation order that included counselling.

The conviction was recorded.
