Women and children dead as boat capsizes

DOZENS of people, including women and children, died when a boat carrying about 250 asylum seekers capsized in the Mediterranean Sea between Sicily and Tunisia.

The boat got into trouble about 120 kilometres off the tiny southern Italian island of Lampedusa, south-west of Sicily, where over 300 asylum seekers died in another boat tragedy last week.

In the latest incident, Italian news agency ANSA said about 50 corpses had so far been sighted, including about 10 children.

Maltese and Italian ships and helicopters at the scene.

Maltese authorities are coordinating the rescue operation, which in international waters but in a Maltese rescue zone.
