Wondai set to bloom for spring expo

BETWEEN the frost and the blossoms is where you'll find the Wondai Spring Garden Expo.

Spring is a beautiful time of year and Wondai gardeners are ready to show off their prowess in full bloom.

The Wondai Garden Expo will this weekend take over Wondai Sports Grounds over two days. It will feature market stalls, displays and open gardens.

Wondai Garden Expo president Helen Young said the expo continued to evolve.

"This year is the most amounts of stalls that we have ever had," she said.

"A lot are growing as a boutique nursery. They give good advice about the plants they have and how to grow them.

"We have quite a distinct season difference here and spring is where you can get back in and plant."

The expo will have three open gardens in the Wondai area.

"We haven't had reliable rainfall, so it's harder to do good gardens in this area," Mrs Young said.

Mrs Young said the expo was more than an event.

"It's a destination and it's a great place to meet up with family and friends for the weekend," Mrs Young said.

This year there will be 10 new plant stalls in what will be the 22nd year of the Wondai Garden Expo.

Garden guru from Rockhampton Tom Wyatt is coming to the expo as a special guest to share his knowledge, with two presentations on Saturday and Sunday morning.

Musical entertainment will be provided by Wondai's own Stepping Stones group.

As well as gardening stalls, the expo will also have wine and cheese tasting, craft stalls and small-gift stalls.

Wondai District and Garden Club secretary Ann Weiland said the Wondai expo was different to bigger ones because all the stall holders were boutique nurseries.

"They are all very knowledgeable and will tell you how to grow the plants they sell," Mrs Weiland said.

The Wondai Spring Garden Expo will be on September 26-27 at Wondai Sports Ground and Lions Pavilion on the Bunya Hwy.

It runs from 8am-4.30pm Saturday and 8am-1pm on Sunday.

Entry is $5 and children are free.

The official opening and presentations to the garden competition winners is at 11am.
