Woods: Life ban too harsh

RUGBY LEAGUE: Wests Tigers skipper Aaron Woods says he believes in second chances and says a life ban is too harsh for any player found guilty of gambling offences.

While he would not comment directly on teammate Tim Simona's case as it is with the NRL integrity unit, Woods made a general comparison with betting-related suspensions and bans for using performance-enhancing drugs.

"A life ban is a long time," Woods said.

"People who test (positive) for steroids, they get two or four years.

"If they do something wrong, you've got to have a chance to come back from it.

"But in saying that I don't know the full details of Tim Simona.

"That's all with the NRL, it's hard to comment on."

Simona is set to learn his fate this week after he was issued with a notice to cancel his registration over allegations he bet on several matches last year.

The 25-year-old Samoan international is reportedly accused of laying small bets on players he was marking to score and faces a potential lifetime ban.

NRL boss Todd Greenberg has said he would come down hard on anyone found betting on opposition teams.
