Work begins on one of state's largest Mormon churches

CONSTRUCTION has commenced in Augustine Heights on one of the state's largest Mormon churches.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held during the weekend for the new multi-million dollar facility.

The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints meeting hall, complete with a chapel, classrooms and large recreational hall, is expected to be completed by the end of next year.

President of the Brisbane Australia Centenary stake Adam Hannant said the 2000sq m facility would meet the needs of residents in Springfield and surrounding suburbs.

"It will facilitate stake events and conferences and can seat more than 1000 people," he said.

"The recreational hall will also be used for dances, cultural events, sporting events, Sunday school, training and seminars.

"The building will be a beacon to the community where people can come and learn how to raise happy families that last forever.

"Our main focus is on trying to build happy and resilient families."

Mr Hannant said the new facility would support residents in Springfield, Goodna, Redbank Plains, Forest Lake, Collingwood Park, Camira, Acacia Ridge and surrounds.

"When the meeting house is completed, it will be open to the public and anyone in the community is welcome to attend," he said.

Mayor Paul Pisasale spoke at Saturday's ground-breaking event and said the new building would bring Ipswich residents together.

"The meeting centre will house a chapel and multiple meeting rooms that the church will share with the community, which is great to see," he said.

The 1200-seat Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints centre, at 80-82 Leon Capra Dr will have a bigger seating capacity than any church in the Ipswich region.
