‘Worst of the season’: Bennett’s scathing review of Souths

South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett has labelled his side's 39-24 loss to Cronulla on Saturday night as their "worst performance of the season" as a potential ladder slide hangs over their heads.

Despite clawing their way back from 14-0 down to be 14-12 after 30 minutes, the Rabbitohs never really appeared to be in the contest at PointsBet Stadium with the Sharks always seemingly one step ahead.

The Rabbitohs made 12 errors and completed at just 63 per cent against the Sharks and they're now in danger of slipping outside the top four unless they can turn things around in coming weeks.

Bennett's men have now dropped from second to third on the ladder following Canberra's win over the Warriors and they could slip further if the Sydney Roosters beat Gold Coast on Sunday.

"Other than Parramatta when we had a lot of Origin players missing about eight injuries we've had pretty good performances even though we lost a few games," Bennett said post-game.

"But tonight we were just way off the pace. It was certainly our worst performance of the season."

Aside from Alex Johnston (knee) and George Burgess (suspension), the Rabbitohs had a near full strength squad against the Sharks, who welcomed back Andrew Fifita, Matt Moylan and Wade Graham to be at their strongest.

And in a further blow to their top four hopes, Sam Burgess could potentially miss their blockbuster clash with ladder leaders Melbourne at ANZ Stadium on Sunday after he was placed on report for a high shot on Moylan.

Bennett was scathing of his team's performance.

"Outplayed, out-enthused," Bennett said.

"We haven't been like that all season, there's no reason why we couldn't turn up here tonight and play with a lot more enthusiasm.

"We did what all the losing teams do - we had multiple errors, dropped balls, missed tackles, penalties, that's the characteristics of a losing team. We were way off our game."
