Young Swan struck down by glandular fever

AFL: Isaac Heeney has been struck down with glandular fever, with the Sydney Swans confirming they will be without their young gun for the start of the season.

Heeney missed the Swans' pre-season match against GWS on Friday night because of a virus, which has since been confirmed as glandular.

Sydney's head of footy Tom Harley told the club's website he was unsure how long the 20-year-old would be out of action.

"Clearly this is disappointing news for us and for Isaac as he has had a terrific pre-season to date," Harley said.

"However, Isaac is receiving the care and rest he needs so we're confident he will return to play early in the season and I've no doubt he will make a solid contribution when he returns."

The news is a major blow to the Swans, with Heeney primed to move into the midfield in a more permanent capacity this season, particularly in the absence of Tom Mitchell.
