Youngsters lend a hand

GENEROSITY is flooding through the community.

And this time, it is Monto's St Therese's School students who are lending a hand to property owners.

The school's Year 6 and 7 students spent a day outside the classroom this week, working in two groups on six properties.

A group of parents volunteered to help with the driving, providing lunch and helping the children in the field.

School principal Tim Franzmann said his pupils were enthusiastic about the idea and ran with it.

He said there were no complaints and the children felt a sense of team spirit.

Land owner Scott Dowling said he was grateful for the help.

He said floodwater moved so fast it took away top soil and fencing on his property.

"The group covered about five acres and picked up rocks and wire fencing," he said.

"Logs were removed by machinery and most fences were gone.

"They mainly picked up small things that would take days on our own."

One child said the experience was like a team building leadership camp.

"It's not fun, but it's not painful," he said.

"We collected four tractor buckets of rocks and we found rusty metals and snake skins.

"There are two more farms to do and it's been a great break from school."

Mr Dowling said he had also registered for assistance from Blaze Aid but had put himself as a low priority because he doesn't have stock on the property.
